<image:caption>That evening, the troops reported to divisional headquarters: "Captured: approximately 150 civilians." The officer responsible there, Karl Wilhelm Thilo (who became a lieutenant general in the Bundeswehr in the 1950s), reported the following day to the "German General Staff at the Italian 11th Army" in Athens: "150 bandits killed." In doing so, he portrayed the criminal act as a legitimate military operation. In Athens, the officer responsible for the war diary, First Lieutenant Kurt Waldheim (later Secretary-General of the United Nations and President of Austria), completely altered the report. He wrote: "In the area of the 1st Mountain Division, the village of Kommeno was taken against strong enemy resistance. Enemy casualties."</image:caption>

<image:caption>This photograph illustrates the strategic importance of the railway line between Thessaloniki and Athens for the German occupation forces. The line was considered of "vital importance", as Greece's poorly developed road network was largely unsuitable for the transport of heavy military supplies by truck. During the invasion and occupation of Greece, and throughout the following years, German troop movements and, above all, the transport of supplies relied almost entirely on the railway network.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One day before their execution, the author's father wrote a letter to the German commander in Lamia requesting a prisoner exchange. It was signed by all the German prisoners. A week later, the letter was found lying outside the entrance to the German headquarters. Based on this document, the author was able, during the 1980s, to trace the families of 27 of the prisoners and inform them of the fate of their relatives. Until then, all had been officially listed as missing by both the Wehrmacht and the German Red Cross.</image:caption>
